Transition of the energy system from a Transmission System Operator (TSO) perspective

Solar and wind generation will be a major primary energy source in a decarbonized energy system. This is a 180 degree shift in our design principles, from demand always in the lead towards capturing the wheather dependant generation for all required demand. Insights from a Transmission System Operator (TSO) responsibility’s view will be addressed.

A presentation by Alan Croes, Head of Energy System Planning | System Outlook at TenneT, a major European Transmission System Operator (TSO).

View from the Speaker

Question 1: What drives you?
Being in the forefront of the energy transition towards a decarbonized system.

Question 2: Why should the delegate attend your session?
The new energy system requires new functionalities and therefor creates new opportunities for business. Expanding your view beyond your own current business requirements could give you a leading advantage.

Question 3: What emerging technologies / trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
The most effective/efficient interface between a very volatile wheather dependant source of energy and the current demand profile is not known yet. Batteries, P2G, P2H, demand side response, etc are all in the race to cope with this.

Question 4: What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
These new trends will have to bring robustness, reliability and affordability in the new decarbonized energy system.

Question 5: What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
Our current fossil fuel based way of thinking and framework based upon availability when needed for an affordable price.

About Alan Croes
I have a professional interest in wicked problems, where society, technology and environment meets business goals. Being involved in driving the enrgy transition forward and bridging the gaps between a variety of stakeholders is a perfect fit. Continuous learning and identifying new opportunites through collaboration with peers and other stakeholders is my standard approach. Today’s responsibilities at TenneT TSO are mainly focussed on future scenario storylines and opportunities from sector coupling. Other positions are Boardmember of Renewable Grid Initiative (RGI) and Member of the Administrative Council of CIGRE on behalf of the Netherlands.

About TenneT
TenneT is a leading European electricity transmission system operator (TSO), with activities in the Netherlands and in Germany. We strive to ensure a reliable and uninterrupted supply of electricity in our high-voltage grid for some 42 million people.

At Tennet we are primarily tasked with providing power transmission services, system services and facilitating the energy market. Our core tasks follow from our appointment as grid operator under the Dutch ‘Elektriciteitswet’ (E-wet) and the German ‘Energiewirtschaftsgesetz’ (EnWG).

Alan Croes is speaker at the 2022 edition of the Green Chemistry Conference.
