Renewable hydrogen can be produced via various conversion technology chains. Torrgas has developed a systematic solution that creates the opportunity to convert a wide variety of biobased feedstocks into renewable syngas and thus renewable hydrogen.
The vertical integration over the full conversion separates the feedstock upgrading via torrefaction from the gasification & syngas/hydrogen production. This allows scalable, affordable and carbon efficient production of green syngas/hydrogen. Scalable because high performance torrefied pellets are applied as fuel; scalable because the feedstock supply is made independent from the local available renewable feedstock; affordable and efficient because the gasification process converts all carbon into high value products biochar, syngas and bioCO2.
Question 1: What drives you?
The firm believe that the we can replace fossil industries with sustainable and affordable alternatives that bring only gains and no harm.
Question 2: Why should the delegate attend your presentation?
- So far, very few, if not any, technology has succeeded to produce low cost, sustainable syngas/hydrogen from biowaste. Torrgas has systemized the conversion technology chain that will make this possible. By converting torrefied biomass into syngas, biochar and bioCO2 it converts all bio-carbon into three high value products.
- Torrgas gasification provides a (far) cheaper, more flexible, (far) more CO2 efficient solution for hydrogen production than electrolysis. Nevertheless the gasification lobby is very weak in comparison to the hydrogen lobby and thus very few experts are aware of these benefits.
Question 3: What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
In the energy transition we have made great progress in the production of renewable power. However 70-80% of the transition is related to molecules and not electrons. One of the next revolutions in the transition will be the challenge to replace our fossil molecules with renewable, circular alternatives.
Question 4: What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
Complete substitution of fossil fuels in 40-50 years.
Question 5: What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
The willingness of fossil industries to make the change and put capital at risk
The fact that most corporates executives are risk avoiding
Decision makers/corporate executives have a fossil mindset
The “transition problem ownership”; apparantly there is no problem owner
About Robin Post van der Burg
After working 10 years in various positions at LyondellBasell in the Netherlands, the USA and the UK, Robin repatriated to Amsterdam to realize his entrepreneurial ambitions. Robin co-founded Topell Energy in 2006. With the support of significant capital investments from RWE Innogy and others, Topell succeeded in proving torrefaction technology on commercial production scale. In 2012, Robin and Topell co-founder Erwin Eijmans moved on, establishing Torrgas to develop disruptive scalabe bio-gasification technology. Robin is general manager at Torrgas and Torrgreen (a mobile torrefaction technology). He holds an MSc. in Chemical Engineering from Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, and an MBA from Rotterdam School of Management, the Netherlands.
